- He saw the true face of the twentieth century and chose to become a reflection, a parody of it. No one else saw the joke. That's why he was lonely. (Off-Kommentar über die Genese des Comedian) ·

Ich muss das einfach mal hier lassen, wie Antifolk-Sänger Jeffrey Lewis die aktuelle Weltlage mit "Watchmen" vergleicht:"My current (and constantly evolving) understanding: I'm very sorry to say, it seems we are back in Watchmen chapter XI. In real life, Gorbachev was the paradigm-shifter Adrian who saved the world, who gave the world a get-out-of-jail-free solution to living under the constant threat of WW3. And, like in WM, there were hints that the solution would not be eternal. The illusion that we were still in the age of Gorbachev ended in 2022. The age of Gorbachev was an era in which peace and democracy were GIVEN THE OPTION to be prioritized over violence, an option which to some meant "weakness."(...)
In real life, Gorbachev was the squid. It is my position that Watchmen could not have been written even one year later than it was, because of the emergence of Gorbachev's policies in that year, and how those policies changed the situation. The squid-that-was-Gorbachev turned back the hands of the clock and brought the world back from the brink of annihilation not by destroying/sacrificing NYC but by destroying/sacrificing the USSR. The result of the destruction of the USSR was to roll back the history of Russia to pre-Soviet, pre-1917 Revolution, the result of which is that Russia now has a czar - an unfathomably-wealthy ruler-for-life with territorial ambitions BASED ONLY ON TERRITORIAL AMBITIONS not on even the CONCEPT of "ethical" ambitions that the USSR/Communism brought to the table. Whether the USSR was sincere in the "ethical" element of Communism's ambitions is a subject of debate to perhaps equal or surpass any debate-subject in the history of civilization. Regardless, with the USSR effectively destroyed by the peace-keeping sacrifice of Gorbachev/Squid (a squid which did not drop out of the sky to annihilate the nuclear-paradigm in one heartbeat, as in Watchmen, but instead fell on the world from 1985-1991, seemingly slowly at first and then seemingly all at once), the next result is, more or less, exactly as positioned by Moore in Watchmen: this world peace is not going to last, because it is an artificial get-out-of-jail-free card that has come from a "savior" superhero figure, but has not come from the universal human heart. When Moore, in the voice of God(frey), at the final words of Watchmen, says "I leave it entirely in your hands," he speaks to US. He/she/it speaks to YOU. To ME. To HUMANITY. And although I have written an entire book on this subject (which remains sadly unpublished, for 25+ years, as I continue to endlessly revise it, and endlessly hope that a publisher/savior will appear to help me bring this book into the world), I will state a little hypothesis here, yet again: Moore, and his comic book Watchmen, are at a pinnacle of 20th Century artistic genius unsurpassed (tho arguably matched) by any other work of art in the 20th Century, and yet-unrecognized as such."
