- Succesful bands by their very definition are as interesting as packets of cornflakes. No, it's strange, weird, fucked-up, unsuccessful pop music that I dig. Deluded pop music that wants to be successful and can't understand why it isn't. I don't mean any of that avant-garde shit or stuff made for and by those who value musicianship, but the cheap and nasty and mistaken and cracked, sung by singers who will fuck up with their first hint of success and by bands who will only ever make two singles before they fall apart. - After we knocked THE KLF on the head, Jimmy spend about a year doing a series of large paintings depicting apocalyptic scenes involving ourselves, the destruction of Stonehenge, the unleashing of dark forces and the deaths of thousands. All a bit childisch and comic horror, but incredibly well executed. I liked them. Then he destroyed the lot by sanding the paint off the canvases, carefully sweeping up the dust and keeping it in a series of jam jars. One jam for each painting. Why? Best not ask. We all deal with our moments of doubts in different ways. (S. 94) ·

- Rule one: never get involved with another artist. Two centres of the univserse in one kitchen don't work. (S. 115) ·

- One of the things I always loved about living in Liverpool was that it never felt like you were living in England. The locals always considered themselves Liverpudlians above and beyond any nationality. Maybe this is because of the massive majority being of Irish extraction and because, as a great seaport, the city had its sights set on the rest of the world and not on London, let alone such cultural backwaters as Manchester. - "Don't be afraid. If you want to do something, just go ahead and do it, but be prepared to take the blame, to feel the fall. Don't sit around waiting to be asked, to be given permission. Just get out there and do it."
Yes, I know it sounds like the blurb on the back of one of those American self-help-bollocks books. But it is a simple fact that every generation of artists needs to rediscover this; to smash the yoke of pop, art, literary history and have their own Year Zero, their own small-press revolution, their punk revolt and their Marcel Duchamp.
